Street food in San Salvador: 7 must-visit stops

By Always El Salvador Team1 min read

San Salvador is best eaten on foot rather than sitting down. These are seven stops any local will recommend before a restaurant with tablecloths.

  1. Yuca frita with curtido — any cart near Boulevard de los Héroes, after 6pm.
  2. Raspados at Mercado Central, with the tamarindo or ensalada syrups.
  3. Elotes locos in Parque Cuscatlán on weekends.
  4. Pan con pollo — the Salvadoran sandwich nobody explains well until you try it.
  5. Empanadas de leche, sweet, for dessert, on any downtown corner.
  6. Minutas shaved by hand, not by machine — you can tell by the ice.
  7. Pupusas in the late hours, after midnight, near any nightlife spot.

None of these stops has an official name. You know them by the line.
