El Tunco Guide
There’s a version of El Tunco that shows up in every travel guide: the beach, the surf, the sunset.
El Tunco is better understood through the way a day unfolds here. Breakfast somewhere casual. A few hours in the water. Lunch with the ocean in view. A walk through town when the heat starts to ease. Sunset somewhere with a drink in hand. Then dinner, music, and the possibility that the night is nowhere near over.
It’s relaxed without being sleepy, social without feeling overproduced, and small enough that you can actually get to know it.
If you’re planning a trip to El Salvador, start here.
Breakfast different
Breakfast in El Tunco is less about rushing out the door and more about figuring out what kind of day you’re going to have.
Start at Balance, Surf Café, Nomada, or Point Break. Grab coffee, something to eat, and take your time. There’s no real reason to hurry—the beach isn’t going anywhere.
And neither is the rest of the day.

Lunch whith a view
By midday, you’ll probably want food—and El Tunco makes that decision fairly easy.
For lunch, put Dale Dale Café, Roca Sunzal, Pargos, Coyote, and La Bocana on your list.
Ocean views help. Cold drinks help more.
And yes, you can make lunch last longer than intended.

Stay for sunset
This is the part everyone tells you about.
They’re not wrong.
Find a spot at La Bonita or La Guitarra and stay until the sun disappears. The Pacific does most of the work.
You don't need much else.

Dinner isn't the end of the night
When it gets dark, El Tunco changes pace.
For dinner, check out Captain Cook, Bao House, Bad Fish, Good Friends, Tunco Veloz, or Garage Burgers.
Then decide what happens next.

After dinner
Maybe it’s a drink at Mopelia. Maybe La Guitarra, Michela, La Libertad Brewing, or Tipsy Vato. Maybe you end up somewhere you didn't plan on going at all.
That's kind of the point.

Keep the night going
If you want to keep the night going, La Bonita and Kakos bring the music, drinks, and late-night energy.
Palm trees, string lights, the ocean somewhere in the background.

El Tunco rule
Don't try to do too much.
El Tunco rewards curiosity more than scheduling. Come with a few places saved, but leave enough space to follow whatever looks interesting when you get there.

Because the best version of El Tunco isn't necessarily the one on the list.
It's the one you end up finding between breakfast and sunset.
Consider this your starting point.
El Tunco, El Salvador.
