3 days of surf in El Zonte: a beginner's guide

By Always El Salvador Team1 min read

El Zonte has the perfect spot to learn: a sand-and-rock bottom break, consistent waves, and enough surf schools to find an instructor almost any day of the year.

Day 1 — Fundamentals on the sand

The first lesson never touches the water. You practice the "pop-up" — the move from lying down to standing — on the sand, until it's automatic. Sounds tedious. It's what makes the difference for the rest of the week.

Day 2 — First waves

With low tide and small waves in the morning, it's time to get in. You'll fall more than you'll stand, and that's exactly what's expected.

Day 3 — Going solo

By day three, most people are already catching whitewater waves without direct help from the instructor. Time to rent a board on your own for a couple of hours and feel the real progress.

Lessons run $20–$35 for a two-hour session, board included.
