Cerro Verde National Park connects three volcanoes at a single lookout: Izalco, Santa Ana, and Cerro Verde itself. You don't need to be an experienced hiker to do the short trail — but you do need to be up early.
Timing
Leave San Salvador before 5am to catch sunrise light. The park tends to cloud over by mid-morning, so the first couple of hours of daylight are when you get the clear view.
The trail
The short loop around the Cerro Verde crater takes about an hour, works for almost any fitness level, and ends at a lookout facing straight into Izalco's active crater.
For Santa Ana volcano
If you want to hike up to Santa Ana's turquoise crater lake, you need an authorized guide — arranged right at the park entrance, no advance booking needed in low season.
